This has been my project for today. Will quilt it tomorrow (machine). This was a whole lot quicker and easier than the paper pieced, hand stitched blocks I made a few years ago. Spent 3 years working on them and finally gave up and just made a lap quilt out of what I'd done.
This is one I did by hand stitching fabric around diamond cut outs,, which you popped out after you got the pieces sewed into a pattern. I wasn't consistent with my color placement. Live and learn! Bright --might need sun glasses!! |
These are gorgeous!!! I love tumbling blocks, but never felt brave enough to attempt one. You did an awesome job! :)

I actually like the fact that you weren't consistant with your fabric placement on the first one. I think it makes the whole quilt look a little mysterious and quite interesting moreland!
You're right...that second one is bright!!!...but I love them both. If you don't like your first one, I'd be more than willing to give it a great home. ;) ;) Good job on both of them. |
If you don't like it, I'll take it. It looks good to me. I think you did a very nice job on a difficult project. :D
I like the different illusion you got with the nontraditional placement of the pieces just as well as I like the traditionally placed ones! Two different looks, 2 wonderful quilts! :D :D :D
The first one has the illusion of opaque blocks, gradually merging into solid and then beginning to fade out again. I agreee with the misterious interpretation and would add mystical to the description. The second one is playful and reminds me of a court jester.
Tumbling blocks is one of my favorites... I think you did a beautiful job and I love the colors..
Your new one is nice, too, but that first one is REALLY interesting. It's so multi-dimensional!! :D
Give us a tut on it.
beautiful quilt, love the colors too!
Love tumblilng blocks!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the first one... WOW !!!! love that its random.. so many blocks just POP !! You did an excellent job... Just love the way the first one turned out... WOW !!!    four thumbs up all the way !
I really like both of them. They are both lovely in their own way.
First, consistency is hugely overrated, I agree with what others have said, the non-traditional treatment adds a lot of interest. I am close to done with my TV hand project, The Grandmothers Flower Garden. Sounds like this would be ideal for a hand work project.

the quilts are both beautiful i love the bright colors it gets my vote... |
Looks great. You said it was difficult. There is an easy way to construct the top in about a day. Kaye Wood has a pattern on her web site that I used with strip quilting. Very easy. Fast construction. Mary Korpal

I like both quilts. One day I will try tumbling blocks
don't give up, look for an easier way. I wanted to make a tumbling blocks quilt but didn't want to deal with all of those points... I had head that Kaye Wood has a pointless thing she does so I went to her site and found the Stacking My Blocks pattern there. It's so easy. I think she has a YouTube video on this technique too.

Awesome quilts.
Me too. Looks great...almost like an Escher
There is a pattern for strip piecing the Tumbling Blocks, it is "Not Your Grandmother's Tumbling Blocks." Not a book to buy for one pattern like some are.

Great color placement on the first one. Are you kidding?? This makes your eyes move from place to place. Far more interesting than the predictable placement. I say Hurray!
Nice work and I am very fond of the them
Very good work. J J

These are gorgeous!!!
the are beautiful-good job--what about a tut?
Thanks for sharing, I love tumbling blocks!!
I like the first one, different, that is what quilting is all about, being different, I do it on purpose...
There is also a "Not your Grandmother's tumbling blocks (and Flower Garden)." Done by strip piecing and cutting into triangles that make diamonds.

Very nice quilts.

Marci Baker has a very easy way to do tumbling blocks. go to aliciasattic.com.
Awesome. Everyone will think it is the way it is supposed to be.
All I have to say is: Great job .. thanks for sharing ...
You did wonderful. They are very nice.
Very nice accident. If you don't tell anyone, they will never know you didn't use a design wall and many hours moving everything around to get your final quilt. I've always wanted to do one; I didn't want the seam in the block and the difficulty inherent using the traditional method has always scared me off. Beautiful work. Congratulations. Joyce in DE
