velvet-backed silk wholecloth quilt

I made this quilt for my daughter who loves teal. The main top fabric is a hand-painted upholstery/drapery silk remnant, which I couldn't resist when I saw it at a local decorating store many years ago. The back is purple velvet from a duvet cover that constantly malfunctioned, until I was forced to take it apart and put the fabrics in my stash. The additional fabric on the front was leftover from a quilt I made for a customer, and the extras on the back came from leftovers of various sewing projects of my mother's, given to me when she stopped sewing about 12 years ago.

I am happy to have finished a quilt, reduced my stash and pleased my daughter. My daughter is happy that she is now warm at night!

Lovely. I enjoyed reading about how your fabrics were upcycled into this great quilt.

No, not hard, but very very messy! It was all 100% cotton so there wasn't a problem with pressing and inadvertently melting it, which might happen with acetate velvet. But oh BOY did it shed little bits!! And my carpet is dove grey so every little speck showed beautifully...Also it didn't really want to slide for the FMQ, so I had to wrestle a bit. I think that would have been greatly minimized with one of those extra-slippery sheets you can get for your work surface, and if I had been using grippy gloves, or cut-off exercise bands for handling.

I would happily work with velvet again, but I'll have to find another duvet cover reduced by 80% to afford it...

I never would have thought to back a quilt with velvet. I bet it's soft and warm!
