This is what I decided to do with my jellyroll...
My co-teacher is getting married May 1st. I had the kids in our class draw and color pictures related to her wedding and gave them ideas like: wedding dress, cake, bouquet, the couple, etc. These are their ideas of what her wedding will look like (knowing of course that purple is her favorite color). I scanned their pictures and printed them on the printable fabric (washable of course). I'm very excited! Now I can't wait for the day of the shower as I plan to have the kids present it to her earlier that day.

I also scanned her invitation and found a photo of the couple on FB and included both of those.

Don't you love the blue and purple wedding dress!

My two favorite squares.

I love it-the colors are great. Don't you just love the innocence of kids? They draw what they feel. Your co-teacher is going to love it.

Kid art is my favorite! I'm thinking of taking some fabric to school and making a "Downey" quilt with the kids - turning it into a math lesson as we cut the pieces. hmmmmm....

When my DD was in 3rd grade, I volunteered in her classroom. One of the projects I did with them was to make a quilt. It was AMAZING how enthusiastic all the kids were - even the boys! They didn't even realize the math lessons involved! Her teacher talked about it for years.....

to start I wanted to tell you that your quilt is beautiful.. the kids art is adorable, you truely have to love the imaginations that they have.. What lesson did you include on this? I am just curious.. was it a math lesson? I think that teaching kids to think of others is a good thing..

LoisN 03-20-2010 07:43 AM

As my dad would say, "That's a keeper." It's beautiful. I'm sure she will LOVE it.

I haven't included any lessons on this one. They knew that I was going to make it and that their pictures would be one it. -that's really all here.

I would like to do another quilt with them, perhaps a Downey quilt http://www.quiltsforkids.org or even one that will be a part of our silent auction to benifit our school. In this lesson I would like to include some multiplication facts, area and perimeter of pieces on the cutting board, and "if I start at 4 and my piece is 2 and 1/2 inches wide, where will I cut?" kind of thing. Then "how many squares do I need to make it 'so' wide?"... "how big will it be when it's finished?" (area and perimeter again)... those kinds of questions.

grammypatty7 03-20-2010 10:24 AM

Projects like this can do so much for building confidence and self esteem with young people. You are so thoughtful for including the students in this project.

I have saved the originals, but hadn't thought about how to give them to her except in a big envelope.... maybe
