My daughter and I both LOVE LOVE LOVE this Christmas fabric. She has requested a quilt and picked out matching solid dark green. The trouble is--what kind of quilt is good to make using big scene fabrics like this one? We were initially thinking just a simple squares quilt with maybe 9-12 inch squares just alternating the green with the print. Any suggestions?
Thanks! Here is a pic of the fabric so you can see what I am talking about-- found this pic online of the fabric I bought |
Cute fabric - love the retro look. I would find another color and do a D9P with the print being the four 'outside' corners. You can the blocks any size you want - standard is around 3" or 4" but you could do 6" or something. Just a thought.

Maybe use the other fabrics to make 9 patch blocks and use this print as setting blocks and put it all on point. You would have to be careful cutting and stitching the setting blocks and triangles - but I think it would showcase this cute fabric. Good luck!

How about a hole in the barn door block

Attic windows............I am in the process of making an attic windows for the same reason a LARGE print. I didn't eant to lose the beauty of the print by cutting it up and with attic windows it actually looks like you are looking out a window. I think it would be the PERFECT pattern for your fabric you will lookd as if you are looking out the window of the hustle and bustle of the people on the street.
All you need is a light green to go with the dark green for the window sashing. I love the fabric where did you find it on line? I would love to buy some and make a couch throw for my DD and yes I would do an attic windows. |

This is my favorite pattern for using a fabric that needs to be showcased. |
"Just Can't Cut It" pattern is great for large scale prints such as this. Your large scale fabric will be cut into 12" squares, then you need 5 coordinating fabrics.
This pattern is most likely available online. There used to be 4-5 LQS in my area. Every single store carried this pattern about 2 years ago. Needless to say, it was popular at all the quilting retreats because a top could be made in a day or two days. |
there is a pattern called sweet and sassy with a lime twist it would be great for your fabric
|
BQ pattern does 12 inch blocks with strips around. or you could make snowball blocks or churn dash.
|
I would deffinatly use it for a boarder fabric and like the one in the post do three boarders in this fabric one in the middle and one top and bottom and in the empty space maybe a d9p that used the green and a lovely red and this fabric. that would be nice also.just make sure that the boarders don't touch the fabric in the d9p's. this is just my first thought. or another thought is do a star type block with this fabric fussy cut. and get maybe some goldish colored fabric and red for the star s and the green as the background fabric? just another thought.

I agree, BQ by Maple Island would be perfect and would whip up fast
|
Do you have the book "9 Patch Pizazz"? That would be great fabric to use

How about Antique Tile from Quilters Cache?

I think I would fussy cut the blocks and surround them with two different colors. (Or more if you want to) Say your green, a light green and a red pulled from the fabric. Then to puting it together. . Lay out your blocks pleasing to you and sew them together. You could be very exact about this using all red in the center and surrounding it with the light green squares and the lastly the dark green. The fabric is busy, so I would think that keeping it simple would show off the fabric best. Then I would use what ever color I had in the center blocks for the sashing.

You could make a "film strip quilt" and the borders be your green that you already have. I love the fabric.
|
I want to know where you got the fabric I love it!

How about a large center square log cabin with the strips going around - 2 sides greens and 2 sides reds. Or an offset large square with 1 side green and 1 side red.
|
I like the attic windows idea.
|
how about Warm Wishes?
|
A turning twenty with that fabric as the 10 inch block in each one would look great!
|
I agree - Just Can't Cut It is PERFECT for this kind of stunning focus fabric. I recommend it, I recommend it.

Thank you, thank you for all the suggestions! I am going to show all these ideas to my daughter and see what she thinks. As always, thanks for your help! This board has the best people :)

My vote is Yellow brick road or turning twenty
|
I also like the attic window, looks like you are looking out onto the street
