My Gram always told me that there were three rules to having a proper sewing room. She said all sewing rooms had a giant button box, some candy and a space for giggling kids and I've lived by these guidelines.
On the left I have have buttons organized in tackle boxes and on the right is my Gram's cookie container button box full of more buttons. The candy is right where my Gram always kept hers: to the right of the machine (left if you're left handed, lol). This is my daughter's space. They keep their scraps in the file cabinet and all their own tools and mats are on this table. They even each have their own sewing machines. |
Mine: Scraps, threads and from time to time my tools end up in the floor. Have to be careful not to throw them away when done. The room is cleaned after each project. I do have a corner for my son. He loves to draw and color while I sew.

I don't have traditions per se, but I do have my grandma's sewing machine and I usually keep candy in the same place! I also have tons of buttons and then inherited my grandma's button box (a big round tin FULL of buttons!) When I was recovering from a broken foot last year, I did some organizing and the buttons all got sorted by color, shape and size and put in 4 plastic boxes with little divided spaces.

Lisa, your Gram sounds like such a fun person!!!! :D

Love your sewing space and DGM's rules. I have the chocolates and buttons(my DGM collected buttons & I got them when she passed over 40 yrs. ago). I don't have a child's corner as I don't have young children.

Oooh I'd love to have a button collection like that! How fun! I've swapped candy for a big glass of ice water... trying to lose some weight. But my must is to have my computer next to the sewing machine... that way I can sew AND chat!
|
Lol, I'm trying to lose weight as well so my candy stash has been more for the kids or my dh when he has a sweet tooth moment. My Gram is an amazing woman but she was never a teacher so I didn't even learn how to operate a sewing machine until 4 years ago when a friend showed me the ropes. I hit the ground running, from years of watching my Gram, and I never looked back.

I have a large old fashioned cracker jar, the kind you used to find on the store counter next to the cash register. Most of my buttons are in it. I can't have the candy any more, so I leave it for the DH and kids. There's a place for the kids if they want to visit while I sew. They made one quilt, and stopped sewing.

No traditions in mine but I like yours.
|
I've been trying to lose weight so I really don't like having the candy in there but when I tried to take it out, I felt a little lost without my Gram's rules so I put it back. Lol, looks like I'll just have to learn some self control.

My tradition is not really a tradition. It's my own habit.
Since my sewing room has an east facing window, the best natural light for the room occurs in the morning. I have exactly 40 minutes with the house to myself every morning after the husband and son leave for work and school and before I myself have to start getting ready for work. That 40 minutes is spent in my sewing room, without the ceiling lights on - enjoying the natural light, and sewing in my PJ's. |
That's a wonderful tradition Jenny. After time all of our habits become traditions. And we all need that alone time with our craftiness, lol.
|
I have a kids table next to my sewing table in the dining room. It's for my DGD sewing machine and stash. She sews with me a lot.
|
Those are the best memories to make. My girls love to create things and kids cherish the time we spend with them, especially when they're in that creating mode.
