i have started trying to make a dent in my scrap heap. so far you can't tell i have used any at all. i have another of these ready to put together. will post when i have assembled it. this one has what is to my eye a glaring error, but i am too lazy to unsew. maybe after i look at it for awhile. i meant to space the strips differently. do you think i should take it apart and redo?

2 Doods 12-22-2007 08:08 PM

What error? I think it is fabulous!!! :D What a great way to use your scraps! Anxious to see the next one too.

ShellyQ 12-22-2007 08:15 PM

What error, If you are talking about the width of your panels reducing in size across the quilt, I think it looks fab, looks like graduated movement, like in reduction art  Your quilt looks great, don't change a thing :P

jacquemoe 12-22-2007 08:31 PM

I think that was a great idea. Maybe, when I get enough decent scraps, I'll do one like that too. Good job, good imagination.

Error?! What are you talking about? Its gorgeous! I love the different colored strips contained in these little panels with the black borders and the white makes it really stand out. Kind of reminds me of Japanese scroll paintings that you hang up on the wall.

rein 12-22-2007 08:59 PM

I'm liking it a lot - would like to try one for myself! AND by the way, my neighbor who has "taught" me about quilting says I m "anal" - whatever THAT means>>>>~~

I love it and wouldn't change it all all. it looks like a great work of art, and if you mean the size of the strips, I thought it was intentional till you said you made a mistake. I saw no others, so I am assuming it was what you were referring to. I wish I had scraps like it, but I have only just begun and will have to wait awhile till I can do something like it.]

daaaaaaaahling ... it's faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabulous!!! :P

barnbum 12-23-2007 05:43 AM

Hmm--whatever that error is--I think you should write up the directions--including the error--and sell them!
That is beautiful!! :D

Chele 12-23-2007 05:45 AM

SPECTACULAR! My kind of quilt. You really have some neato fabrics. Make more!

Carla P 12-23-2007 05:58 AM

I love scrappy and I love your quilt!! It's beautiful!! Thanks for sharing a pic with us.

ripstitch 12-23-2007 06:01 AM

I wouldn't change a thing as I think it looks great. I'll look forward to seeing the next one.

Merry Christmas, Helen

Moonpi 12-23-2007 06:59 AM

Minda 12-23-2007 05:41 PM

I think it's great looking. I wouldn't unsew anything!!

estherblair 12-23-2007 06:02 PM

Gosh so simple but so Granddddddddddddddddd

nanabirdmo 12-23-2007 06:06 PM

barnbum, thanks so much for the kind words.
there is no pattern involved. i saw a picture in a magazine and thought it could be easily done by string piecing. i cut strips of pre washed muslin the width of my finished strip, pieced them to the length i wanted and started sewing on strips of my scraps. width doesn't matter. (the method is similar to the way we made our table runners in class.) after my muslin is completely covered i flip it over and trim off the excess scrap fabric. after i had enough strips i simply framed with black borders and sashed with the background.
i had intended for the narrowest 2 to go in the middle, but you all have encouraged me to let well enough alone so i will leave it be.
now if i can just get it quilted and bound. i think i will attempt to quilt it myself, either by hand or maybe just tacking. i usually am way too impatient but i want a hand project for the long winter. wish me luck.

rein 12-23-2007 07:58 PM

nanabirdmo I would love to try to do this. If I get into trouble may I PM you to find out what I am doing wrong? I think it is beautiful! No need to undo one single thing! That black binding is really striking and brings the whole thing together. Did you have anything between the muslin and the scrap strips? Good luck with your winter project!!!!

nanabirdmo 12-23-2007 08:06 PM

rein, you may certainly PM me. glad to be of assistance.
not quite sure what you mean about "Did you have anything between the muslin and the scrap strips?" the strips of scrap fabric are sewn to a muslin base. that's string piecing. we discussed in another thread awhile back. it is sort of like paper piecing only the muslin stays put as the foundation.
this is absolutely the fastest quilt i have ever made. i literally finished to the point of taking the picture in one day. about 6 hours. that is part of the fun. satisfies my need for immediate gratification. ;-)

redrummy 12-23-2007 08:36 PM

since you were able to sew it fast, and got satisfaction there, go slow and hand quilt it. You will get great joy, and knowing you have done a beautiful quilt (we all think it is by the way) will warm you when you use it or give it away. I hand quilted one, and enjoyed doing it each evening as I watched tv or sat and talked to hubby. I felt so good knowing I put that effort into it, I think you will feel it too.
Deb

nanabirdmo 12-23-2007 09:18 PM

thanks for the encouragement, red. i think that's what i will do.

That is one thing I have never done is string piecing..The instructions seem simple enough but my brain refuses to grasp it

I think yours is beautiful.. I would leave it as is...

I'm where you're at Diamonds! If it's not rotary cut and basic sewing I'm clueless. Paper piecing...foundation...sewing pieces onto muslin... my brain doesn't have the section capable of grasping such ideas.

(she has moments of persistent wonder)
You sew the pieces right onto the muslin :?: Do you fold the edges under? Do you use a regular stitch?

nanabirdmo 12-24-2007 06:06 AM

okay diamonds and barnbum,
please go up to the search option at the top of the page and click. type in "string piecing" and many links will come up. they are from this forum and several explain how to do string piecing or "flip and sew". please, please try it. it is by far the easiest method you will ever use. i would explain it in my own words but i could never do as good a job as the ones who have gone before;) you will zip thru your scraps in "no time flat", as my old granny would say.

barnbum 12-24-2007 06:09 AM

You're giving us homework? But, (add whine) I'm on vacation and I got all my corrections and lesson plans done before I left the classroom...

Thinking to herself...
but it is about quilting.... which I can do more of since I'm on break...and I did get all thsoe scraps down....

I'm headed there now! Thank you, nanabirdmo!

nanabirdmo 12-24-2007 06:18 AM

yes my dear, and there will be a test......... NOT :!: :!: :!:

barnbum 12-24-2007 06:21 AM

Okay--here's a great site I found from the search--in case anyone wants to skip that part!

http://quiltville.com/stringquiltingprimer.shtml

Do I get an A?? :D

Or do I have to actually apply what I learned? :?

nanabirdmo 12-24-2007 06:43 AM

i'd say you definitelly get an A+++ that is a great web site. explains way better than i ever could. the only thing i did differently with the strips in my quilt, i started at one end and didn't draw a line.
i am so anxious to see your quilt, get busy

nanabirdmo 12-24-2007 06:44 AM

p.s. have a great christmas!!!!!!!!

rein 12-24-2007 09:22 AM

Barnbum thanks for the link... I may ive it a try when I get my other projects done.. The site makes it so easy even I can wrap my brain around it and accomplish one

nanabirdmo 12-24-2007 06:45 PM

you can do it, rein. it is great fun. can't wait to see all the scrappies.

butterfly 12-24-2007 08:48 PM

wow ya'll give me inspiration! :)
I just started back quilting so I don't have but a very small bag of scraps...so I will have to wait to accumulate some:)
I do want to make something like the Solid Color Amish one I saw! I liked the bold colors :)

rein 12-25-2007 08:00 PM

Thanks for the faith you have in me nana - will keep you posted - but won't be for a bit due to needing to make the birthday swap blocks plus a couple of other needed chores.
