I'm just learning the "quilting" part of quilting so I'm NOT an expert but I will tell you, if you don't have a "walking foot" for your machine, bite the bullet and spend the $20 or so to buy one. That little gadget makes all the difference in the world in how your quilting looks on the back side. Mine is perfect ...yet, but at least I know that eventually it will be nearly so with the walking foot.
I got a walking foot. I've just been too chicken to try it! I got mine at a second hand shop my hubby and I like to visit from time to time. It came in one of those $20 plastic storage on wheels thingy with three drawers and a LOT of other sewing stuff!!! It just so happened to be the one I need so I got the whole lot for $10!! I just got done a small quilt for the daughter of the guy we get our hay from that I was going to try it on but didn't. (too comfortable with hand quilting) but I AM going to try it on the one I'm making for her little sister! Going to do the disappearing nine patch for that one too. So wish me luck!! I'll post pics of them when I get them both done.

Hey Feathers, did you get some of that fabric at the "Special" sale that we went to in H.R.? I am still going thru fabric from that adventure....have made several things to help the children at the Shrine Hospital in Portland. Your quilt is great and will surely brighten some childs day! Hugs, and thanks for the chicken.....LOL.
