I got my cats from the humane society when they were 3 mos old. I don't have a problem with their claws because I got them this scratching tower. They even let me clip their nails.

My many years of experience with cats is that some scratch like crazy and some don't.
We reluctantly had ours de-clawed. I really hate that practice though. We were pretty desperate b/c they were scratching everything in sight even though we had all the scratching posts, climbing towers etc.
Only one of ours has her claws but she goes out. She must scratch outside b/c she's really good in the house. I would never let the others out.
