Great idea and something I was looking for as I am currently making a baby quilt for a friend of a friend and wondered if I should place the label after the quilting or before. Question answered. Thanks for sharing. Bridget and I think it looks great!

thanks for the idea and suggestions .... I need them. I've found several quilts from days gone by with no label or an unreadable label, it would be so wonderful to have that part of the quilts story.

nice idea for a label. My MIL had over 20 quilts stolen while she was moving. They were locked in a storage shed. Someone broke it and took them. It would have helped if she had put labels on them.

I had heard about adding label before quilting. I have never seen one done, this is great! Also had a thought that not only would it deter a possible theft, but it will also SPUR the quiltmaker to actually label their quilt, since many leave that to the last thing and it often doesn't get done. I helped on a quilt registry project and believe me, when you are long gone, those who have your work in their hands would LOVE to have a label for them to know you better!

You do need to plan in advance where to place the label on the back so it doesn't end up in the wrong place. I usually lay the backing down then the quilt top. I lay my label on the quilt top itself sticking pins in each corner which gives me a good idea where to place the label. I then use dots of Elmer's Washable Glue to hold the label in place, press to dry glue. Then I use my sewing machine to sew the label to the backing along the label border edge and then again just inside the muslin part. Hope this makes sense.
