I made this bag using pieced denim squares of various shades several years ago at one of our sisters' get togethers. I changed the pattern some so that I could have a bag to use when travelling. The denim made it extra sturdy. I made the straps extra long and that has worked out better than I ever dreamed. The original pattern was more a purse and had a zipper closing and shorter handles. It was also not as tall as I made mine. You would be amazed to see what all I can get into this bag when I take it on bus, train or plane. It has travelled a lot of miles and never let me down. On a normal trip, it carries my meds, a water bottle, snacks, a book to read, crossword puzzles, the things in the pockets that are permanent residents such as pens, pencils, ruler, toothbrush and paste, hair elastics and clips, hair brush, tissues, flashlight, and I'm not sure what all else, LOL. On top of that, I add my purse, graph paper, some magazines, my neck pillow and a fleece throw. All in this one poor bag. Of course, the pillow and throw kind of stick out the top, but it works great for me. They tuck between the magazines and graph paper. LOl. The pocket on the side holds my cell phone and a little cash for quick access.
the flap actually covers the top of the pocket, I just wanted you to see
