Thanks for all you input everyone. I will leave the arms as they are and finish off the seat. QuiltE- I never thought of scotch guarding it but that is a terrific idea. Thanks Working on a Carpenters Star today but will hopefully have the chair project finished by next week and will repost a finished picture. Thanks again all for your help.

I agree with the others - leave the arms bare. I love your idea of quilt-covering the chair. I think I would add either elastic or draw-strings to the edges so you can tighten everything up for a more fitted look. TFS

Definitely use Scotchgard. I love it and use it often. I made my husband a BBQ apron by appliqueing a hamburger on it and used Scotchgard very heavily, and he can still use it, even though it's been in the machine many times.
