Default Reverse Applique Horse

Well, I decided to take a little break from the big project and play with a little reverse applique for the first time...I actually think I like it! I made this for my granddaughter's riding instructor for her birthday.

The only problem I had was the top stitching...does anyone else have trouble stitching on batik? I had more thread breaks, even after changing needles, cleaning bobbin area, etc...just kept shredding that doggone thread (cotton top & bottom).

That is very pretty! I think I read somewhere that poly thread is better with batiks than cotton. May have been here on the board. Try poly and see if you have better luck.

Were your bobbin and top threads the same weight? I used same weight thread for bobbin and top thread to piece. When I started quilting with a heavier weight thread using the same needle, top thread started breaking a lot. When it finally dawned on me to change to a larger needle, everything was fine.

I like your horse. Reverse applique is fun to do.

One blogger that uses mostly batiks suggested to me to use size 70 machine needle and that made a world of difference for me!
