This is my philosophy as to why this is visually very appealing. The scraps create an utter chaos of the senses. Random colors, patterns, and values. There has to be some sort of reason in the chaos and something that anchors all of it together in the black surround. Otherwise it would be too visually overwhelming. Of course, you can use any color. Red, blue etc. it doesn't have to be black. but a constant throughout the quilt is necessary to hold it all together IMO. I hope this stimulates and makes others bring out their SCRAPS!
