Get out! That is so clever. I like how you finished the edges as well. I'm now doing a 'cheater' binding on mine and that makes them go a lot faster. I cut the backing an inch larger than the mug rug all the way around and then fold so that it looks exactly like a regular binding. So much fun on small projects.

What batting did you use? I have lots of Warm & Natural scraps if you think that would work.
I used fusible batting, not sure what brand. Having the fusible kept the selvages in place after I arranged them. You could use a glue stick on your warm and natural batting to hold the selvages in place as you go. Make sure the glue stick is washable school glue (I use elmers) Just slide the glue stick on the back of your selvage and place on the batting and press with an iron and the selvage is fused to batting. The glue will not harm you needle. It washes out easily. You also could use spray adhesive.

I like cheater binding also on small projects like mug rugs. Thanks for the reminder!
