Default A "hug" for a friend

My Mom and I worked on this quilt together before my mom had her heart attack. It's for an old friend from Guiding (known as Girl Scouts in the US). The woman we made the quilt for, a long time friend, was a great mentor to me in my teenage years and really helped me learn to be me, not some version of who someone else thought I should be.

She found the love of her life later on in life. They were only married a year or two before he suddenly passed away. Both my Mom and I have moved away from the area where she still lives (me a few hours drive away, while my Mom is a few days drive away now). It wasn't easy trying to work on a project with my Mom being so far away, but on two separate visits we were able to make it happen.

My mom even took the hit and did the cutting and ironing, and let me do the sewing (we couldn't get the seem allowances the same on the two different machines).

We put a label on the back, a turquoise charm square I had lying about with the following poem:
We heard you are sad and blue,
And may need a hug or two.
While we can't be right there,
Here's a "hug" to show we care.

Made with love, 2013
Handmade by Tammy and Sue.

I'm still getting the hang of free motion quilting, so I started with wavy lines across the seams. But I decided I wanted hearts in the center of the blocks, so hearts I did. While, not perfectly executed although shockingly the back tension was fine, I don't really care because it shows that it really is handmade.

I agree it is a lovely quilt and your poem is perfect. I am sure it will bring tears to her eyes but also comfort her.

what a wonderful, thoughtful gift for your friend and mentor. And even better that you and your mom both know her and worked on it together. I'm sure she'll be very moved! Lovely job!
