I was lucky enough to be able to visit this show last week http://www.textileart.com.au/ . I am guessing I may be the only member of this board to have done so, so I took some photos to share with you.

These quilts were from the “State of the Art” Exhibition of Art Quilts by Members of Queensland Quilters Inc at the show. They have a website at http://www.qldquilters.com/

The first one that caught my eye was:
Burdekin Sunset by Betty Bull
63cm wide x 58cm high
Silk tops, Angelina, foil strips, leather, felt
This quilt shows a sugar cane fire in North Queensland. My photos don’t do it justice- it was really evocative of a fire. You could almost feel the heat.

Prague Subway by Chris Jones
56.5 cm wide x 53.5 cm high
Cotton
I snapped this one because it shows a subject that I would never in a million years think of using in a quilt- inspiration is everywhere!

Ebb and Flow by Jane Rundle
Missed the dimensions on this one, sorry.
Satin, polyester fabric with cotton appliqué, machine quilting and beading
This was inspired by a bubbling creek (the earth is red here, in case you are wondering about the colour choice).

If my Life were a Garden, by Michelle Steel
116cm wide by 147cm high
Cotton, hand stamped, machine quilted
I liked this because it was almost very regular, but also a bit crazy. Quite like my own garden…

Jewelled Sky, by Melissa Zillmann
138cm wide by 78cm high
Muslin, assorted fabric, lace doily, beads, acrylic paint, appliqué, beading
The lucky artist was inspired by the view from her own deck.

Do you think she picked the sashing first?!!

Thank you so much for sharing. They are most unique and so painstakenly created. More intricate than I could muster, for sure. Thanks, Ruth

Wow!! Those are amazing. You could really feel the movement in the one called Ebb and Flow. Those are really beautiful. Thanks so much for posting the pics.

Oh mrspete, if you want to see intricate, have a look at this pattern that was being sold on one of the commercial stands! It is "The Peace Quilt" by Margaret Rolfe.

The finished quilt was displayed at the end of an aisle and when I saw it from afar I thought it was appliquéd, but when I got up close I could see each bird was made of seven pieces of fabric, all paper pieced... and look how many of them there are!

I love the sashing and the border blocks (each made of four pieces) on this as well, and the gorgeous Japanese fabrics.

I asked the guy on the stand if they had sold many of the pattern and he said "em, we have one or two ladies who are half way through it..." Good luck to them! It is absolutely gorgeous but I don't know if I would have the patience.

thank you for sharing this pictorial experience and the descriptions as well...what a world we live in that some folks are so talented and that they share with those of us that aren't...

Thank you so much for sharing these. The Shipshewana quilt show last week was pretty traditional "Americana" in style. It's so nice to see the contrast and be able to show it to my DH too. No single style is correct and talent stretches around the globe.
