Default Are there anymore 'Happy Accident' designers out there?

I have been working on an orphan/scrap quilt on the Orphan Challenge and because I started with some blocks already made (over half) and several feet of black/white/red strips sewn together I went with what I had - 9 1/2" blocks. Got the center all stitched together and then started trying to get the first border on...uh oh...got a problem. I solved the problem by adding a strip in the middle of all four sides and now appliqueing either a strip triangle or a light triangle. I think it is adding quite a nice detail I would never have thought of. If you are not a pro quilter who knows how to measure everything and make it come out a perfect match, what do you do?

fascinating quilt! That border is super appealing ... and fits so perfectly with those blocks! I wish my orphan blocks looked so good in a scrappy quilt.

That is such a beautiful quilt. You were lucky to have those blocks.

I am a card bearing happy accident quilter. I wouldn't exactly call myself a designer. I love what you have done.

I'm not sure how to answer your question about not making a "perfect match", but one way, other than really learning the math, is to use graph paper. I've drawn out a lot of "uh oh's" on graph paper and been able to figure out how to get things to go together. Just remember to add your quarter inch since you will probably draw your quilt as finished blocks. That's where one of the "add a quarter" rulers comes in handy. I think your quilt is lovely! Way to go, girl!

Make it wonky, IOW, it wasn't suppose to be perfectly matched, I meant it that way
Be a frog: rippit, rippit, rippit
Put it on the design wall and pin sew the seams in place
Add another spacer between the center and border and make the borders longer
Leave the small triangle overlapping the larger ones.
Be sure to leave 1/4"+ so the binding doesn't cut off the points
Throw it all out and start over (although I think what you have is great)

There's lots of "Happy Accident" options.

All I know is I like it, and it is an interesting and very pretty quilt. Actually you have inspired me to go out on the limb, and not worry so much that mine follows all rules, but is creative. I would like to become more of a creative quilter with my own style.
