I live a few miles from the BEST dollar store in the world. She had these for, yep $1. They can be used as furniture moving blankets ( mine measure 60 X 70) or as padding to go over wood or springs in upholstery. They are about 3 or 4 X as thick as poly craft felt and look very similar in texture. I did wash a piece to see what would happen. Mine came out fine. I think this may be a recycled product, so there probably is a lot of variation in what you can get, so you might want to test any that you purchase.
