I googled Powell Nostalgic Oak Cedar Chest, and I'm sure that is what it is. The Powell Co. makes all kinds of furniture. I saw a small one very similar to yours, and it was listed as Powell Cedar/Hope chest. I believe that one was Cherry. If you google Powell Cedar Chest you will see many sites still selling them in all sizes and different woods on the outsides. Some are upholstered. I'd say yours is a Hope chest intended to set at the foot of a young girl's bed. Upholstered top would have doubled as a place to sit and read, etc. I was probably about 8 yrs. old when my dad made mine as a Christmas gift, I loved it for years. Wish I still had it! (I'm 71 now.)
