    Hi Quilters:
I just finished making this Westfalen Waltz block from the Quilters News Magazine February 1990 . The block was by Jan Cook of Lakeport, CA. The quilt she made from this block was a semi finalist in the QNM's Home Sweet Home block contest. The designer created the block as a remembrance of the homeland of her maternal ancestors who lived in Germany in the 1800's. I love the block and think I might make a whole quilt of it. It's very easy and I just love how complicated it appears when it actually isn't.

That would make a very pretty quilt. I know that you said it was easy to make but it looks hard to me.

That is very pretty - and never seen before by my eyes. Do the rounded block edges meet up with some sort of sashing? Was it paper pieced?

    Hi CCbear
It's easy and it was kinda fun. Try it. I did this block just to try the pattern. This particular block will become a hotpad or potholder as I just used scraps that I didn't have much of. It's very simple. The actual block has another dark blue piece on each corner of the block to make the block square instead of rounded but I didn't put that extra dark blue piece on because I didn't have anymore of that material and because I knew it was going to be a potholder so rounded corners are OK. :)

    Hi Moonpie:
No it's not paper pieced, it's just pieced. I wrote a note to CCbear telling her about the rounded edges. By now you've probably already read it and know that I left off the dark blue piece at the corners of the block as I ran out of scraps in that color and I knew it was going to be a potholder so rounded corners work but if making the quilt, you need to put the corner pieces in to make the block square. Very pretty colorful block. My grandparents were born in Germany came to the states in 1925. You should post the direction I know I would love to make a block like this

I'd be glad to share the pattern but don't know if I can due to copyright rules. The pattern was published in a magazine so it seems like one should be able to? If anyone knows for sure if it's ok to put the instructions here, let me know and i'll share it.
