When my husband and I married, we got a beautiful photo of his grandma and us. Then she died 6 months later. He was 25, the oldest son of an only son, so a lot of her things came to us, partly because no one saw the wealth in her house. I received, and packed away thinking 'someday', a bunch of handsewn maple leaf quilt blocks. Some were sewn together, with sashing, some were just blocks. She had a drawing on graph paper where it looked like she had a plan to set them on point. She even had the sashing already cut, some of it not sewn yet, and a different yellow fabric because she knew she'd need more.
That piece of paper is so cool, and I finaly got to the stage in my life that I was ready to attempt it. So I arranged the blocks the way she planned them, though not hand sewn. Then I found in my stash, an autmn looking fabric to use on the edge of the quilt
This is the pic of how she arranged the blocks, showing what she had already handsewn together, and the next one is the pic of what I have so far. Just needs quilting, and the binding of the autumn fabric, already cut. I haven't decided if I'm going to handquilt it, but I doubt it. I'm more of a machine girl.
I've been married almost 30 years, and knew the family for 3 years prior, and she never showed any quilting ability when I saw her. This is a 35-40 year WIP. She had a wooden quilting frame in her basement. I knew what it was, but I was young, I couldn't see myself ever using it, it went in the 'do not keep pile.
There were a couple of quilts in her house, and I just didn't feel right about taking them , so I got the one I shared here before, all appliqued, and divided the rst among my husband's 3 brothers. I guess I shouldn't have, to them they were just blankets, and I doubt they still exist to day.

That is absolutely awesome. Both the story and the quilt. That is something I have learned not to take for granted - what I have learned from my grandmothers.

This is a beautiful quilt. You have done a great job putting it together. I love the border fabric too.

Nice! And how lucky to have the paper that detailed what she planned to do... Good thing you had the foresight to keep it!
