I start off with small crumb pieces and adding them to the sides, log cabin style if you want, until my piece is at least 2.5" wide. I add a few more to the top and to the bottom of the piece I have going and then I stop and trim it to 2.5". I keep doing this process until my strip is long enough for one side of the quilt.
The nice thing is that you can cut the strip anywhere you want and add a 'highlighting' piece to the quilt. What I mean by that is you can make ahead your crazy patch strip sets and store them until you need one for a quilt and just cut it apart where you need it to add the 'special colors' you have in your quilt to match your strip set! Slice it anywhere you want, add your quilt's special color, join the halves and you have a 'coordinating' crazy patch border matching the colors used in your quilt. Then repeat for the other 3 sides and your new color is now added and scattered!
I dipped into my box of crumb blocks and added them occasionally to the strip set as you can see in the pics.
I hope this answers any questions you have, but if not, let me know and I'll do a tut for you.
Happy scrappy quilting and I hope you have fun with your crazy patch border! It's very fun to make and I must say it is also very addictive!
