I went to my LQS to look at a used Brother 5700 for $449. I had already read reviews on it, people saying they couldn't find parts-hoops and such for it. So I was skeptical about it anyway. When I went to the shop, they told me I really shouldn't get it, for all the same reasons. They started telling me about Janome 300E machine. I really like it, but am debating about spending that much on it. It's regularly $1299 and he told me he could give it to me for $999. Still that's a lot to spend on a machine I may not use every day or even every week. I don't want to buy a machine though that does the 3x5 and wish I had spent a little more and gotten one that does 5x7 area stitching. Can some of you tell me the great things your machines do and which machines you have?

I'll be following this as well. With first gb coming I have a sudden urge for embroidery machine...lol. I've looked at the Brother PE770 (Amazon.com) bc of cost and 5x7...but still this could just be a quick passing fancy.

I am very interested in this also. I went to my local shop and they offered demos on the Janome 300E and also the 200E and gave me leaflets. After reading them through I think the 200E would be enough for my purposes and is quite a bit cheaper. I am going for a demo after my hols (which start tomorrow)in France. By the way I love this site and have done lots of patterns shown by members in tute form. Anne

One word............JANOME
I cannot speak highly enough for these machines.. and i think you get the most for your money.... quality as well.. but be sure to research the pricing for the "software" of all the machines... sometimes that's the pricy part... and get the biggest hoop you can for the buck... we always want more... I have an older Designer I (Hus)... it is a workhorse, but haven't upgraded... lots of bucks for not that much... there are many other co. out there that can give you programs that are compatable for a lot less... and YES... there are tons of designs out there for free... ie. Well I started out with Janome 9000 (which I still have) 15 yrs ago and embroiedery many things for gifts. Then I upgranded to the 10001 (yes a lot of money) but I love it. I download patterns off the internet and over all have never had a problem with it other than operator error LOL. I love my Janomes. My other one is the 3500 that I take to class as it is smaller and more manageable. but you are going to get all kinds of thoughts about many machines so one of the most important to remember is your dealer. Do they give good service, classes and are there for you when you need them. Good Luck

Just wanted to add,,, i hae abut 6 machines.. emb,serge,portable... a few more, but i just got a CG Singer500 on EBay.. for 185.00 delivered!!!! There is a video on YouTube and around the net... where you can see this thing plow over 6 layers or more of denim... It really does... and it's lighting fast.... heck it's no looker, but I LOVE this thing... just want to FYI where you said "thickness"..

I don't think I can help with your decision, but one of my friends came to mind when I read your post. She bought a Pfaff which did embroidery and within 4 months upgraded to another Pfaff that did more embroidery. She isn't a close friend, so I don't know the details of her machines, but I thought the fact that she upgraded so soon might be useful? Every quilter is different, so now I "am thinking" this might be worthless information? The shop (where I bought my non-embroidery Pfaff, allows customers to upgrade with sort of a trade in thing like car dealerships do.)
I think the advice about being comfortable with your dealer is a good one. Classes accompanied both my machine and my friend's, plus free machine cleaning for 3 years. |
This is a great topic. I've been wondering about just how much I would use an embroidery machine if I got one. I've been tossing the idea around for a few months. I have so many machines I just don't know.
My Bernina doesn't have an embroidery option to upgrade and I don't want to trade mine in. I have the money saved (amazing that I haven't used it) Will continue watching this, thank you~ |
