New machine dilema...what would you do?

A couple weeks ago I asked what machine you all used for FMQ and of course, I got a hundred different answers. I expected that. I can't do much FMQ on my little Brother because the arm space is only 5 inches. It's a fight just to get a baby quilt through there. I am wanting a new machine really bad.... like an itch I can't scratch.... so I went shopping. I've whittled it down to two.... the pricey Janome Horizon 7700 and the free Singer 301A that is sitting at my mom's untouched for at least twenty years. It needs a good cleaning but I'm sure it works just fine. I'll get it someday whether I buy the Horizon or not. But the Horizon is sooooo pretty. I love red. And it has all those wonderful attachments and stitches and it even has fonts. I haven't heard too many complaints about it other than the price. The old Singer only has one foot and two clunky attachments that I would never use... Buttonhole and zigzag.

What would you do with those two choices? Let's pretend money is not a problem

Money no problem? I'd get both. The Horizon for the novelty of it, and the 301 for the straight stitches.

If your Mom is willing to give up the Singer why not get both? I would be thrilled if my Mom would give up her old Singer 15, and I already have 5 machines that I use regularly. I love the fancy stitches on my computerized machines, and I do use them, but I really want the old workhorse too.

I don't know anything about the new machine (my White is 50 yrs. old), but I'll get my Mom's 301A some day too (not that I'm in any hurry if you know what I mean). It does sew a really nice straight stitch just as my Featherweights. Good Luck in your decision.

If money was no object, I'd get both. LOL

I agree with the majority-both. The 301 is a wonderful machine, but the Horizon is a dream from what I've read. Not much help am I?

If money is no problem then what is the debate? I would get the machine of my dreams and get moms too.

I vote both as well. It is great fun to have a new machine with bells and whistles, but there is something about sewing on a tried and true that can't be beat

if you can afford the Janome, I would go for both. You might end up using both for different purposes. I have a Janome 19606 and a tiny, very cute little sewing machine that was sold by Hancock fabrics a while back. I use them when the mood strikes or for different needs.

I vote both also. You will find you use each machine for different purposes and won't know how you did anything before you got them.
