What is the worse thing that has happened to your quilts?
 

I made a quilt for a relative and later I found out that she had put it in her outside dog house. I was beside myself. I did such a good job on that quilt and paid a LA quilter to quilt it. I used expensive fabric and made nice blocks. It was a very pretty quilt. Now it is muddy and ripped and full of dog hair. How could someone do something like that? I now know that I have to rethink who I give my quilts to and to explain how much work and money went into them. I'm so mad at this gal who threw my quilt in the dog house, I could explode. And she has no clue I'm upset.

Oh my, I surly don't blame you for being upset. I know, they (who are "they" ?) say, once a gift is given, it is no longer yours, and the gift-ee can do as they see fit. I know this is true, but I still become upset when I see my hard work being treated in such a manner. I'm sure the relative has not a clue as to what you put into that quilt. Forgive her in your heart and move on. You will feel better for it. And yes, rethink who to give your gifts too. Now, go brew a nice cup of tea, eat some chocolate, start planning your next beautiful quilt, and have a nice day.

I do feel your pain and anger and disappointment. I would also be quite PO'd at this person.
It's just easier to write a check for some people.
Or better yet - don't "exchange" gifts if neither of you want or need anything - Sometimes it makes life a lot simpler for both of you. (Talk it over first, so that it can be a mutual decision.)
Donate what you would have spent to a charity that you consider worthwhile.

Yes, I'd be besides myself.. There are people that just don't think..

The only quilts I make to give to questionable relatives are rag quilts. If they are abused it doesn't matter and they can't say I didn't make them a quilt.

One of the first quilt tops I ever made was when I was about 18, and when I moved away from home I left it there with some of my other belongings. Shortly after I left, my parent's house burned down, and I thought the quilt was gone forever. HOWEVER, when sifting through the ashes, my quilt top was found, still completely intact. It had a few blackened places, but I washed it and most of them came out. It went on to become a quilted, fully completed quilt! I lost track of it somewhere along my journey....I'd love to know if it's still around :)

Your story beats mine. I had a quilt that ended up in the dogs bed, but I guess I should be greatful after reading your tale mine was at least inside. To this day I can not get that image out of my mind.

I would be so upset, if that happened to a quilt of mine after all the love put into it, long past I crocheted a afghan for my parent and she had it on a bed in the house for a long time for some reason it made it to the couch where it finally ended up for everyone to sit on once again unapreciated but then it should have never surprize me because nothing i ever did was good enough.
