Civil War Tribute Backing?
 

Does anyone remember how much fabric it took to back the 100x 112" quilt. I found the backing fabric at Quilt fabric closeouts at a really good price and i would like to order some before they sell out but I cannot find the quantity of fabric needed.

I am not familiar with that quilt; but QuiltCalc says 9 3/8 yards for a 100 x 112 " quilt.

It depends on the width of the backing, how much piecing you are willing to do, and how much you need around the edges. A longarmer usually wants 3-4" all the way around, so the back would need to be 106-108 x 118-20. If you're quilting yourself you may be happy with 2-3 inches instead. For the standard 45" fabric I would buy 10 yards and then make two lengthwise seams.

Actually I would *use* 10 yards, but would purchase a bit more, perhaps 10 1/2.

Dunster, you said the LA'r usually wants 3-4 inches all around. What if you just did not have that, wanted to use a certain piece as backing, but it came up a little short, but covered all the quilting area. Could you add a cheater piece that would be cut off later if you double seamed (like jeans seams) to make it sturdy? I always wondered that when I read the requirements as that has happened to me a few times(cutting it close) just doing on DSM,

I think this would work as long as the backing wasn't exactly the same size as the quilt top. I think you'd need the backing to be an inch larger on all four sides, just to be safe. And you wouldn't need to double seam the extra fabric; a normal seam would work fine.

if your wide fabric is widder than your top then you need one length plus inches. If it is not as wide or larger then you will need two lengths. Unless you are using the John Flynn method.

I would make a row of blocks about 2 foot down for an accent that should makeup the difference if it is to short

I made that quilt and I can't remember how much fabric they sent me for the back, but they didn't send me enough. I had to fudge and use some of my own civil war fabric and put a stripe down the middle to make it long enough. Seems like they would have their act together. I spent enough money on this BOM for 12 months plus the backing.

The backing fabric is 108". So I will need 51/4 yards .

Reminds me to make my binding and backing for this quilt. I did it all of scraps and finally got the border triangles on it. I have 11 yards but will probably do a scrappy type of middle piece to use up some mid range pieces of "scrap" that I used in the quilt.
