What size should a baby quilt be?

I have been looking at baby quilt patterns for days trying to find 'just the right one' for a co-worker who is expecting in October. I've gotten some great ideas on the board but I've got this two fabric pattern that I picked up in Hawaii a last year that I really want to make. In looking at my friend's facebook page, she has a Hawaiian turtle on the header & that what this quilt is. The problem is it is only 24" x 36" finished and it would not really work very well to just add boarders given the style of the quilt - it's a two fabric applique technique. So the question is, is this too small for a baby quilt? I see wildly varying baby quilt sizes online. What do people think? Oh, and I also thought about trying to photocopy and enlarge the pattern but I'm not sure I could pull it off. Thanks for your thoughts!

Tell her it is perfect for the car seat ! Perfect for first floor, perfect for bassenett. Enjoy your creation!...if it is already made. If not. ?. My smallest is 38 x 45. I like the craft size pre-packaged batting..cotton, not fluffy rolled but folded.. if you add boarders and for corner squares with pinwheels to anchor the boarders might stretch the sides. Please post final! Love to see what you come up with!

Good luck,
Ell

Thanks Ell. Nope, haven't started it yet. Here's the pattern though...

That is a very nice pattern. I like the car seat etc. idea. Or she could hang it as a wall hanging in the baby's room.

IMO, it's too small for a baby quilt, as is. How about just enlarging the existing border? If you could add 3" to each side, that'd make it 30" x 42", which would at least be better.

I have that pattern and I had planned to use it as the focal point and add other blocks and borders to enlarge it also.

I made a small one like this and many on the board said that this is a perfect size b/c the child will be able to carry it around when it is a little older.

Seems to me that another border (or two) wouldn't hurt the design any. It's a very cute pattern.

Rather than add more borders I would take it to a blueprint place & have them enlarge it so that the width would be at least 30". It is a really cute pattern and with all that work it would be great to have it large enough as a cuddle blanket as the child grows.

Kinkos or Staples or Office Max etc could do a photocopy enlargement of the patterns.
