I got my project material for my chicken-quilt. Told myself straight away that I don't need nor WANT a 'stash.' Then I went downstairs in my basement craft room to try to find the paper-cutter, and found what appears to be about 20 yards of fabric that I purchased several years ago for "cute curtains" to hide the undersides of my craft-counter (apparently THAT never materialized...) (OH...HA! "Materialized" get it?! I made a fabric funny!)

Anyway, I said to myself: what the heck am I going to do with all THIS?! It's obviously not going to get where it was intended anytime soon. See, my problem is this: it's January. I'm in "get rid of it" mode again and am piling stuff up to send to the curb in "Free Stuff" boxes, and I didn't need to find this. But now I don't want to just get RID of it...

Ok, pay no attention to those 2 new tote boxes that I just bought on clearance at Target the other day JUST so I'd have "clean" totes for my fabrics...

OMG I'm insane...I think I'm not only bi-polar, but now I've got clear evidence that there are multiple personalities working against each other in my head.

Maybe I'll offer it up on the other board. It's seriously too much to 'practice' with...I would think...right? Isn't it?

By the way, I don't expect anyone to actually respond to my rantings...or maybe I'm looking for validation that maybe...I might not be AS crazy as I think. Off to school now...catch you all in the a.m.

How about asking your multiple personalities to compromise? If you still like the curtain fabric, and you think it would work in a quilt, then cut off about 5 yards and save that for a practice quilt. This would give you enough for a backing if needed, then donate the rest. Having said that, it would make your new tote boxes feel so at home to have something to store...

Whether you want a stash or not is immaterial.

I rather wish i didn't have such a stash myself. i have been culling things out for awhile now. books, patterns and even fabric and blocks i'd made but lost interest in. I won't live long enough to use up all that I have. so it's senseless to buy more stash. so go for it! Clean it out.

I don't have much of a stash because my mood and ideas change from year to year. And what i might purchase this year to make might not be something I want to do in the future. New fabric is always coming out to choose from. So I usually try to keep only the basics, W on W or tone on tone of several colors.

I never wanted a stash but then ended up with one. The only time I find it helpful is doing applique when you need a speck of something.

Yesterday, I dumped all my "stash" bins into a big laundry bag. It will sit there for a few months and if I dont use it I am getting rid of it.

I counted my UFO's and I have 14 that's enough for now to work on.

Like one person said, my tastes change or I can never find that 4th fabric .

I am using my stash to learn to FMQ but muslin is a whole lot cheaper than LQS fabrics.

Fabric is the material of our lives.

Honestly, never started out with the intentions of having a stash. Years go by and sales go on and the totes multiply. So you start tucking away nice creamy background fabric, and how about some more blues-can never go wrong with that color. Then you pick up a yard of fabric for a future baby quilt; never mind conception hasn't even happened yet.

I did a full inventory this past fall and actually scared myself with the amount of fabric I have. I 'll never live long enough to make a decent dent. Obviously, I wasn't "scared straight", have purchased at least 25 yards since then. Did I mention that between hubby and BFF, I was gifted 44 fat 1/4s at Christmas.

So you are not alone and best not to fight it.
