My Aha moment
 

Yesterday I was looking through our local thrift store and happened upon the bedding. I know about using sheets as fabric and backings, but as I was looking at the pillow cases, I thought to myself, you can also use these for fabric as well. Where has my mind been all this time? I've used pillow cases to make the pillow case dresses for girls, but never dawned on me to use the fabric for quilts. Silly me. Just thought I would pass this information along. They are not made of 100% cotten, are they?

Some are all cotton, you just have to read the label...I buy pillowcases at the thrift store to use to make dog beds for the spca..I stuff them with all scraps too small to keep for future use.

Pillow cases work, they are good in a quilt. I am doing one now, with some pillow cases I found when cleaning my mom's linen closet. Some had to be pitched, I am sure they are not all 100% cotton, but sentimental means a good deal so am using them here and there. It is a quilt for my bed, will not be overwashed as in for a quilt I might do for my grandchildren or kids for that matter. Some of the old pillowcases, especially the old embroidered ones are very nice. Some time ago, I sewed two quilts completely from pillowcases/sheets from yard sales and thrift stores. They turned out well and most of all, I am happy with them. And if I am happy, not so concerned with what someone else might say. Have fun with it.

Creativity is the quilter's middle name, I think!

I've used both and haven't had issues. Hey, if we like them and they are for use then we're not as picky. If you are making them for competition, that's a different issue. Some of the sheets and bedding are interesting.

I would say use what you find and think would work for you. I know our grandmothers and mothers did not always have the greatest of fabrics but many of the quilts have survived the years. I know a lot of quilters that use poly cotton blend in their quilts.

If you like it and it works for you that is what is important. No quilt police here.

Ok, quilt police look away now. I've used mattress pads as batting. I get them from estate sales, wash and bleach the heck out of them. And only use them for couch throws where you want a nice HEAVY warm (hot) cover. Oh, and at $2-5, SO much cheaper than commercial quilt batting!
