mixing fabric types

I have this pattern for a carry around blanket - it's small and has no batting.

You make the 3D bowties and use them to hold little toys that come on rings. I think it's the cutest!

I'd like to make the ties from satin, but don't have enough satin for the rest of the top.

What do you think about:
Minky on the back
satin for the bowties
cotton for everything else.

I do have enough satin to make the larger block and just the top of the tie - cotton would be the tie bottom and the rest of the block.

I may make a trial version and wash the dickens out of it and just see what happens. That would use up my little stash of satin, but at least I'd know.
Okay quilters - help!

I like what you have suggested, satin bow ties, pieced with the cotton ( add stability to the satin edges) and Minky on the back. I might try it with cotton bow ties, pieced with cotton and flannel on the back to see which turned out best. You might also try a smaller version with 1 bow tie to attach the toy in the center and add the ribbon loops around the edges to make a taggie/ bow tie combo.

I think what you have would be great.

You might want the ties to have one surface cotton, the other satin for ease in keeping them tied.
That is a really cute quilt!

Just re-read and sounds like that is what you are planning.

Some satins wash better than others.

I don't believe satin will hold up in use and multiple washings no matter how cute it may sound and look.

I've decided to put our ideas together. It's written as 21 X 21". I'm doing it 14 X 14. That will be two satin blocks and two bow ties. The ties will have satin on one side and cotton on the other. Minky will be on the back. I'm also going to make it a taggy by sewing loops of ribbon in the outside seams. It will not be bound, but will be birthed - sewn right sides together and then flipped. No batting. I'll let you know how it works out!

Sounds like a good idea. My only concerns would be raveling of the satin, but others have suggested ways to deal with that - cotton on the other side, and stabilizing the edges of the satin.
