Who Let the Cows Out?? ... a jumbo one block quilt with fleece backing

For Christmas, I wanted to make a special Thank You quilt using these three cow fabrics. It seemed so appropriate to use the Churn Dash block, also known as Hole In The Barn Door. However, the block pattern was going to cut up the fabrics too much to "see" the cows.

So, why not do one jumbo sized block? The block itself is 47" with an additional 4" extension all around
of the background cows. For extra length, I added the top/bottom stripes finishing at 1-1/2" with an additional 4" again. Final size is 55"x66".

The cow-spotted fleece was my first venture in using fleece as a backing. I reverse sandwiched the quilt, with the churn dash facing down and added the fleece on top with 505 spray. Straight line quilting went smooth for the churn dash and stripes. Switching to FMQ for the background cows, there was too much drag to slip-slide as needed. Problem solved easy enough, by flipping it over, and FMQ on the fleece. This worked great as I already had the markings I needed thanks to the straight line quilting.

Thank you for looking!! ... I now introduce you to ....
Who Let The Cows Out?? :)
(can you tell this went to a dairy farm?:D)

The churn dash and stripes were straight line quilted.
You might be able to see the curly-q-swirl FMQ in the background areas.

Love it! Enlarging the block is a great idea--I'll have to remember that. It really lets your cows show. You're getting really good at FMQ, too.

i love it! my sister and i have cow wars and send each other cow related items all the time. i have not done a cow quilt for her yet and may need to steal this idea. i did do a really lovely table topper in a DWR and quilted it with cow heads in the middle of each ring. took her a while to find those. good laugh! thanks for sharing your quilt.
