MTx190 for Davis

Hi
I have read through several old post, and while the answer is probably there somewhere I thought it easier to just ask again! I have 2 Davis VF2s and have purchased some MTx190 #14s to use in it. My question is how do I make sure I install the needle in the machine correctly. Have those who use these needles found a size that does not seem to work as well?

Thanks for the help,
Jp

Orient needle so scarf or short groove is facing shuttle (right), long groove away from shuttle (left). At first I used one of the flimsy aluminum needle threaders with the pointed wire at the end to orient. After a while I was able to hold in fingers properly oriented and insert without the threader.

The needle stops on some of the older Davis' are not the greatest (curved or radius groove) so sometimes I have to lower the needle for the shuttle to pick up the top thread loop.
