How to measure hexagons

When a pattern calls for a 4 inch hexagon what is being measured; the size of one side of the hexagon, the distance across the middle from one side to the opposite side, or the distance from one point to the diagonal point?

A)

When I bought a small packet from the company that puts out the commercially cut hexies, they use the measurements of the flat side.

That being said ... it's best to check and be sure, as there are a lot of times when one of the other measurements are used.

Depending on what your pattern is, the size may not matter, other than you will have larger/smaller ones and thus the overall pattern effected.

If my memory serves me right, I think it is the side. I got 1" plastic hexagons that you baste around to make a GFG. I think the size the I bought were 1" and that was the lenght of the side. Good Luck !!

I got a bunch of dies for my studio cutter, two of which were custom ordered and for all the measurement was for the side from point to point.

When my grandmother gave me a 2.5" hexagon template, it was measured side to side. When i got a 1/2" hexagon template, it was the finished measurement on the side. So, the method of measurement differs depending on who you're talking to.
