Need Help Using Alphabet Stitches
 

My Baby Lock Quilter's Choice (this model is now called the "Melody") has three built in alphabet & number fonts, which I've never used. I'd like to use them to do some simple quilt labels, but I'm having trouble with my test pieces. I'm using regular cotton quilting fabric, and have tried using paper to help stabilize it, but the piece doesn't seem to move at all, it just stitches everything in one place and puts a hole in the paper and the fabric. What advice can you give me? Is there a tutorial somewhere I could refer to? I have looked at my manual and the workbook for my machine, but it's not really addressing this issue.

Hi..I don't have the same sewing machine as you,but when I do the little embroidery designs on my machine, I usually have to adjust the pressure of the foot.

Perhaps it needs so etching firmer on the back ie peel away stuff
I have used my machines with no problems.

I have a Juki F600, but my manual says to use heavyweight stabilizer behind the fabric for the alphabets.

I sold machines (many years ago - lol) and we suggested that you use at least a medium embroidery stabilizer for these alphabets. Now a days, they have such great stabilizers. You could even use a water soluble one or a tear away if you wanted to get remove it after. I myself would use a standard medium weight and just leave it in since it is a label. After washing it will soften and not be stiff. Good luck

Check out the presser foot you are using. Some feet are more open on the back side to allow easier movement of the fabric with the bulk of the numbers/letters.

You need to use a stabilizer that's designed for embroidery. Paper is too smooth, so the feed dogs can't grip it and create the text. You can try just laying the fabric on the stabilizer, but you will probably need to pin it (way out of the way of the stitching area) or use a spray adhesive. Starching the fabric will also help.
