Question Regarding Quilt Show Entries

Just a quick question...

When entering a quilt in a show, do you think the quilter should give credit to the pattern designer? Something like..."My quilt was made using a pattern by XXX." or "My quilt is an interpretation of a XXX pattern".

Was recently at a show and saw many quilts that were obviously made using specific patterns, but no credit was given.

So...what do you think? I say YES, credit should be given.

I would give credit. I made the mistake of not putting the name of the pattern and designer on one of my quilt entries but my name was on the quilt info for all to see. I had people calling me or someone who knew me for weeks asking what was the pattern of that quilt. Besides the designer deserves the credit.

Yes credit should be given!

Absolutely! I always give credit to the pattern designer. They own the copyright.

Echo ... Absolutely! And if someone quilted the quilt after you created the top, that deserves a line of credit as well.

Most guilds have rules for entry that DO require you to give credit. It's up to the guild to regulate this and to take it up with the entrants.

Yes! Without credit it looks like it might be an original design. It also is so helpful to those that love the quilt.

Absolutely, I even seen where the quilter noted what magazine and issue of that magazine where the pattern came from.

I do think the designer deserves credit.

I think a number of credits could be given, as I often see something I love and would love to do myself, but could search forever without finding everything I needed.

If someone then recreates it, you should feel honoured rather than upset.

I would love info like: this was was made by Fiona K, using XYZ pattern (designer and company), fabric from the "Poppy" range, designed by Chong a Hwang for Timeless Treasures, and quilted by Quilting by Fiona with "Poppy Border" designed by Patricia Ritter for Urban Elementz.

Wow... Now that I have written it like that it really does show that there are a lot of factors involved in making a great quilt! But if it is on display... Why not give credit where credit is due....
