Mans dress shirt quilt
A family friend passed away and I was asked to make a quilt out of his old button up shirts as a memory quilt for his wife. ANY ideas of how many shirts I would need and what kind of pattern would be best for the plaid dress shirts? I just was thinking a lap or couch quilt...not too huge.
Send me your ideas please! |
This one has been on my bucket list for quite some time. You need 7 shirts. I think the trick to success is careful selection and placement of color/value. I've been saving my husband's worn dress shirts, but he seems to wear a lot of blue, so I'm waiting for him to wear out his green one and his purple one. :)

After my father-in-law passed away, I wanted to use his shirts in a quilt for my husband. I didn't have enough to make an entire quilt, so I decided to combine them with other fabrics. Most of the shirts read as "light" at a distance, so I decided to play on that. I tea-dyed the shirts with white background. I bought some civil war reproduction fabrics in the dark, rich colors that my DH likes and made a log cabin top with a backing of 10" squares. It is my favorite quilt. I think it's because the shirting fabrics make lively lights.
I learned from this and started to collect shirts from the Goodwill monthly sales. I try to remember that I need to buy lots of stripes and plaids that read "light". |
i did one .....just made large blocks from the back of the shirt then did a piano key border

I have seen several of these and some were wonderful. One lady had cut a patch with the pocket on it, and used those in the quilt too. Hope you will share pics.

I am finishing one now; cut into 2 1/2" strips & treated like a jelly roll race, about 1700 feet.

Thanks, Peckish, for the link - on my quilting bucket list.

I knew I could count on you guys! I will let the family know that I need at least 7 shirts to make the project; 2 light and 5 dark...maybe I should ask for a few more and then have a choice. What they give will work I'm sure! Thanks again for the help!

Here's a memory quilt I made from plaid flannel and some additional flannels I added. I personalized it with the burr oak leaves, and on the back I put a pocket from one of the shirts. I may make some other lap quilts for other family, and if I do I will include a burr oak leaf, and I also want to incorporate some of the buttons.
