Please Help! Newbie Mistake #461....Backing Issue

Please help. I seem to have cut my backing a little to short on one side. Didn't realize until after I had quilted some. Is there a way to fix this? I was thinking about unpicking some and inserting a quilt label (a pretty big one). I found a really cute poem that is kinda long so it will make sense to have a big label. But I,m not sure how to do it.....Im trying to put pics so you can see. LOL..I cant really just trim because the front has sashing and a border so it will look yuck if I trim that bottom border. I have that piece of teal fabric I can write the poem on to insert but will that look funny???? I'm too new at this...At least I caught it before binding it. That's a plus I guess? LOL...Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You! This is only my 3rd quilt made..LOL..Ive a lot to learn obviously..I feel so dumb by not catching the mistake. O well! Live and learn right??

Sure you can print a poem on the fabric and use it to add to the back. Turn a 1/4 inch edge over on the piece of material (on 2 sides) that will be sewn to the backing. I would hand appliqué the 2 sides onto the background backing fabric and leave the other 2 sides raw edged since they will be on the quilt side and bottom which will go under the binding.

You can attach a label or a piece of fabric to the back to extend the backing. Remember to always check your backing, they should be at least 6" longer and wider even if you quilt on a DSM. Good Luck. We have ALL made this mistake at one time in our quilting history.

I piece quilt backs often. I think I would just unpick the stitching enough to sew an additional strip of fabric across the entire bottom of the quilt. Looks like you already have a nice veryical strip, just add a horizontal one. The teal would be great if you have enough, or other coordinating fabric if not.

Thank you so very much Tartan! I didn't even think of just turning the ends under and hand sewing it down. Makes so much more sense than unpicking it. Minky is NOT fun to try to seam rip! LOL Although in my quilting journey I've gotten really good at using my seam ripper..

I also learned that not all fabrics are 45 inches wide! So had to add vertical strips to the backing to make it wide enough. Looks okay - but I learned to measure the top and then the width of the backing fabrics before cutting them!

Oh, no! Not #461! Many quilt backs are pieced. Here are some examples:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t148395.html I would just unpick enough where you can machine sew an additional strip to make the backing complete. It doesn't need to match the current backing (looks like minkee?) If you have any of the fabric used in the top, that would be great, but not necessary. you could incorporate the label if you want. You did a wonderful job on your 3rd quilt! |
