Those Race Horses
 

Just for the heck of it, I did some checking. In all the 141 years of the Kentucky Derby, a horse with a two part name (Northern Dancer, Spectacular Bid, Silver Charm etc.) has won 74 times. Horses with one part names (Regret, Secretariat) have won 58 times, and three part names have won 9 times.

Grey horses have won 8 times.
Three times a female horse has won.
19 times a horse whose name started with the letter "S" has won.
And only once was the winning time exactly two minutes flat (2:00:00) in 1964

Interesting. We have Standardbred race horses and it's been my experience that grey horses rarely win. Occasionally there is a good one, but that is the exception. There are a lot of old wives tales, and many betters rely on them when they place their bets. You can be logical if you want, but I'll bet the superstition betters probably win just as often as not. We knew a man who always bet the same number in each race and usually came out ahead--wouldn't tell us what number it was.

American Pharaoh won. The third race of the Triple Crown is the hardest on horses since it is such a longer distance than race horses normally are use to running. Yesterday's race was run in the pouring rain.

Last race I made some $$$ on was back un the '80's at Aquaduct. Didn't know about any of the horses so I bet on Al the Sailor since my father's name was Albert and he'd served in the Navy. Love to go to Saratoga NY every year.

American Pharoah was broken not far from here. As was Tale of Verve and Divining Rod. It truly is horse country here and driving by the beautiful farms is a delight. :thumbup:

She is referring to Marion County in Florida. Ocala is the county seat, on I-75 south of Gainesville. Ocala is surrounded by horse farms, including in the city limits. Also home to the Florida Horse Park, which holds many competitions during the year. Marion County has 35,000+ horses registered but is home to more than 200,000 in the breeding and early training from January to the spring. Check with chamber of commerce and/or the horse park.

All around Ocala there are beautiful horse farms, and now some have been turned into high end housing developments, but when we go there (40+- miles) I enjoy looking and the back roads are full of farms. Get off I-75 and head W on #200 and that is full of places. I am sure if you checked with C of C or horse farms in Ocala FL you would get lots of information. No snow here, lots of grass (FL actually has more cows than TX as grass grows so well here ) and Ocala doesn't have the sandy soil we do here in Citrus (Next Co West of Marion). We are only 4-6 miles from Gulf so more sandy soil, we have sugar sand until you dig down 8-12 inches.

Aiken, SC, has unpaved streets just for the horses to tread on. You can see them working out there also.
