The old-fasioned, tedious way -
There are some parts of the quilt-making process that I enjoy doing the old-fashioned, "tedious" way - even though I know there are tools to make the jobs easier.
Some of them are: Fussy cutting with a rotary cutter Snipping the seams of a rag quilt (great for relieving aggressive feelings!) Hand sewing (the second stitching) of a binding Drafting designs on graph paper Anything you still like to do "an older/less modern" way? |
I do hand stitch the binding closed on my quilts. I don't know why but I like it a lot better and it is a very comforting thing to do in my opinion. And I do start my quilt designs in a grid notebook. But after I have the initial design I do draw it up on the computer as well so I can see what it would look like in its finished colors.

I also enjoy hand sewing the final step of binding. It's kind if mindless TV watching work. Plus I know it's the final step.
I'll do anybody's binding if you'll do my sandwiching. LOL |
I have a fondness for hand quilting.

I am just always so delighted to be in the generation that has a rotary cutter and mat. I watched my great Aunt Maude cut out her patterns with newspaper print. I do enjoy hand sewing the binding to the back of a quilt. But I love my EQ7 program. That save me so much time.

I like hand applique. Also stitching the binding around the back of the quilt.
|
Hand bind and hand applique. Getting ready to go back to the beginning years and hand quilt something. Won't give up the machine quilting though.
|
I hand stitch my binding but that is the only old way thing I will do in quilting. I don't particularly enjoy it but it looks better then machine stitched.
|
I hand stitch the bindings. I don't mind the hand sewing. I don't have any hand, wrist, or carpal tunnel issues so it is t hard.
|
I love to hand stitch the binding on the back. Wool applique' is another favorite - hand stitching with the blanket stitch. My real love however, is when a particular picture of a quilt catches my eye and I can figure out how to make it.
