Dumpster find

When I went to take off the trash today, I saw a sewing machine sitting there. The attendant gave it to me. It's a very nasty Brother free arm. It stinks!! Pics & more info later.

It's a VX710 with only a straight stitch and a zig zag. It's cleaning up pretty well on the outside and that is also helping the smell. I haven't plugged it up yet.

Older Brother machine are often nice and sturdy, at least the 50s and 60s machines I've seen. The new ones are very light weight construction, noisy and jumps around when you sew. The VX710 looks like a 70s machine, hopefully it has a sturdier construction that the current ones. My experience is with the lower priced models, not a top model, so hopefully there are some good new Brother machines too.

This one has the front dial of the tension missing. I've bathed it and oiled it, put a new needle in it and cleaned a mass of lint underneath the pressure plate. Believe it or not, it sews beautifully, straight and zigzag. I'm working on a cabin getaway and this will be perfect to leave there, so I won't be worrying about my better machines. It is a low shank, so I will root through my extras for a couple of other feet. The part that makes it a flat bed is also missing.

It is a very heavy metal machine with a couple of plastic pieces inside.

You're lucky it wasn't one of the later VX series, good find. I had a VX780 for about a minute. Light weight plastic craptastic. It was so cute I had to buy it but once I got it home and played with it I sold it as soon as possible.

When it comes to that, you'll probably want to plug it IN.

Manalto, see Post #4. Biting my tongue and I probably won't be back.
