Minkie Backing

I am going to use minkie for my quilt back. I see that it ravels easily. Should I wash it before using it?

I don't know but I have heard that minkie is hard to work with. Good luck!

No need to prewash minkie..it doesn't shrink. Use spray baste to hold your quilt sandwich together,so it doesn't shift when you stitch it. Be sure to use a walking foot, for the same reason. I do this all the time...works for me.

I just finished a baby quilt with a minkie backing and it was easy to work with. Like Francie said, I did use spray basting and a walking foot and I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

What f you're going to quilt it on a LA?

It sheds dramatically when you first cut it. I cut it and then gently fold it up then take it outside and shake it! After that there is no more shedding.

Quilts beautifully on my long arm! I love minkie backs. Only sheds when cut, take it outside & give it a shake. I usually try to purchase the size I need so I don't have to cut it.

I don't think you need to wash it because it is poly, but be careful if you need to iron it. The dots will disappear if the heat is too high.

this is how i do also. then when finished cutting, i take the scraps out and shake. the birds seem to love it for their nests. i prewash everything ..not because of shrinkage but because of the chemicals in the sizing etc. almost everything i make anymore is for my little grands ...so i even prewash fabric for their American Girl doll clothes and bedding i make them. i've used minkie tops and backs for most of their quilts, plus hats, purses and anything else fun i can think of. i started spray basting my flannel &/or minkie quilts a few years ago. wow, what a fabulous thing that spray basting is. i wish i had tried it years ago! no tucks, no pleats ...smooth backs w stretchy material ...love the spray baste!

Thanks everyone for the comeback. Guess I won't wash it till it's all done.
