Eleven year old granddaughter loves to sew
 

I would just love some advise about how old she should be to learn to use a rotary cutter? She will be spending a couple of weeks with me this summer, is she old enough? Love your input 😊

I would teach her the basics but I would also be getting her a safety glove! Depending upon her general maturity level, I think an 11 yr old should be okay but I would err on the side of caution with the glove.

I second that. Definitely get the glove.

I agree. My granddaughter used a rotary cutter at age 11 but her mom, my DD, taught her how first. I think kids learning to sew is wonderful. She will learn a 'life skill' and have time with Grandma besides. She will always remember the time you spent with her.

Stress safety with the cutter. I'd also put the cutter up, up and away from her so she doesn't decide to show her friends what it is.

Let mom know too so mom stashes her cutter. I can easily see a child pulling that out to show friends and the friends wanting to try it.

This is the third summer she has come to sew, getting her a sewing machine for Christmas. In the past we have used pre cuts or I have done the cutting for her. I believe that she is mature enough, never thought about her showing her friends. Thanks for the insight

My Granddaughter is 12 and she is in 4H and has made several quilts that has gone to State Fair also made a Tshirt quilt for her brother when he graduated from high school I showed her how to use the cutter and said there would be a .25 cent fine for every time she left it open, guess who paid the first fine..

Very good advice. I wouldn't be worried about sewing machine but cutters, I might try using precuts. When I sewed with my Grandmother, there only were scissors in existence.

I agree with a cut resistant glove. Also, I think I would start her out on short sub cuts vs. a long cut across the entire length of fabric. Also like the idea of having a 'fine' for leaving the cutter open.

Good ideas for her using the cutter. If she's well supervised, it should be fine. Glad you are able to have her a while and teach her!
