Using PFD fabric

When using "prepared for dying" fabric do you wash it first?

ManiacQuilter2 05-16-2016 01:51 PM

Interesting question. Never wanted to try to dye fabric. No instructions came with the fabric?? Any instructions on the dye package??

Dolphyngyrl 05-16-2016 03:46 PM

no all the sizing and chemicals are not put on it si I use as is

It doesn't need to be pre-washed in order to absorb the dye, but if you're worried about shrinkage then I would wash it.

It is already "prepared for dyeing". :)

I do not pre-wash it. I just iron it with steam (no starch/sizing) and start inking or dying. :)
I religiously pre-wash all my other fabrics -- just not PFD.

Yes, I prewash mine. You don't know just what chemicals/finishes have been used on the fabric in the manufacturing process. The additives may make the fabric react differently when dyed. I think there is a fabric out there that is made specifically for dying, but I can't remember it now.

no, it comes already ready for dyeing.

I don't know for dyeing but I wash mine before painting.
