Home Warming Gift?

I want to make something small for a friend. Perhaps a small wall hanging or mini quilt. Any ideas? I like the idea of a mini quilt but there are not too many free patterns out there.

If you google 'miniature quilt patterns' you will get dozens and dozens of hits. Here's a good one:

You can also think about a table runner, place mats, mug rugs etc. Lots of free patterns for those out there too.
I would stay away from anything that hangs on a wall, unless specifically requested. I'm not a fan of people trying to do my interior decorating for me.

How about some of those 12x16 pillows and make pillowcases to change with the seasons to go with them?

I agree with Paper Princess... nothing for a wall... better to make a table runner or place mats, if you know her style. For example I'd want country as opposed to modern. Probably a neutral color scheme. How about making a fold and stitch type candle wreath and add a pretty candle? Free tutorials on youtube. (I purchased the pattern and its very hard to understand. I didn't use it!) The youtube tut by Babs at MyFieryPhoenix is called Origami Candle Mat. Other than that you might consider making a nice wine bag and matching coasters.

How about a set of pillowcases??

How about a set of larger potholders/hot pads. I have made several that are 12" square and we use them all the time, not only for hot dishes but also for holders for hot bowls from the microwave. I think it is so much better to give something usable rather than a decorative item that they "have to" use.

Oh I would love to have a table runner with matching placemats. Maybe your friend would too.

How about a mug rug and a pretty mug to go with it?

A table runner, placemats, coasters/ mugrugs are good options for housewarming gifts. Pot holders, decorated kitchen towels...there are lots of good choices for nice housewarming gifts.
As for your statement--" not many free patterns out there". ???? There are literally thousands of free block patterns and quilt patterns. You could start with quilters cache.
