Need cutting help.

I have a quilt top ready for borders. The fabric I want to use has a definite stripe to it, but it does not follow the grain of the fabric. If I cut on the straight grain the stripe is slanted. If I cut on a slight angle so the stripe looks straight, the fabric seems to hang a little funny. Not sure what to do.

Did you already square up the fabric? If you did that, I'm not sure I'd use it.

Can you use the stripes perpendicular to the edges?

You've got to cut on the straight of grain. If you dont like how the stripes look on the straight of grain, pick a new fabric for the boarder.

You can try to straighten it...I would probably find a new one and use this for another project...

i think the angled stripes would make a more interesting border, so i'd cut on straight of grain.

I'd try Prism99's suggestion. Audition the fabric with the stripe running perpendicular to the edge. Nothing lost by seeing how it looks.

How funny does it hang? I would starch the heck out of it, cut it on the print, then quilt it moderately to heavily. The quilting should hold it in shape.

Still, in 2016, fabric companies can not seem to print stripes or plaid along the straight of grain. If your heart is set on using this fabric, I would starch the heck out of it and draw your cutting line with the strip centered. Then I would stitch an 1/8" on the inside (stitch length 3 to 3.5) so when you cut, the fabric should lay flat. Good Luck! :)

I just had a similar experience in a baby quilt I'm working on. The border was a red and aqua checkered fabric but when I refolded and pressed to cut, they were still a little off kilter. Luckily it is a baby quilt and I don't think he will ever notice, especially after washing. : )
