What about quilting/piecing do you prefer/not prefer?
 

I love to quilt and piece and have way too much fabric and everything else connected with quilting. I am making a quilt for someone I am not enjoying making and I have also added some other tops to make in-between so it's something to look forward to. While sitting there sewing, I have thought about quilting and what I dislike and what I really like.

Here are the things I dislike:

1. I just gag if the block has over 20 pieces in it. Made one once and that was enough for me.

2. No paper piecing. I've taken two classes and I know that it looks great, but not for me.

3. If I can't make it regular sizes, then I won't make it. No 95" long and 56" wide.

4. No wool or flannel fabrics.

5. No little clutches, pin cushions or anything else but quilts, purses or totes.

6. No more specialty tools. I have drawers full of them and the instructions to use them.

7. Not too much applique work, some is OK for decorative purposes.

8. Circles are not something I like, but I will make a Drunkard's Path and a Double Wedding Ring quilt soon.

9. Not much interested in making a modern quilt, I like to look at them though.

10. I really hate all the batting I have from my many quilts. I buy batting on sale so it's a mixed mess.

Now here are the things I love about quilting:

1. Some of the new fabric lines are just wonderful. I love bright primary colors on white and have bought them.

2. Really nice patterns out there for my style of quilting, simple and easy but oh so pretty.

3. The Internet allows me to look at many patterns and fabric and I just order with a flick of the wrist

4. My trusty Bernina Aurora 153 and 155 are wonderful to piece on. Any Bernina is worth the $$$.

5. I can ask questions on this Board for help in making or repairing my quilts.

6. Great threads, good blades, super needles and very thin pins for piecing.

7. Digital cameras for taking a picture of my tops to see if anything stands out yucky.

8. New ideas on how to make old standbys like Flying Geese.

9. Blogs to read and of course Pinterest to see all the various quilts made.

10. The wonderful satisfaction of seeing something you envisioned brought to reality. A great quilt.

If there was anything about it I didn't like, I just wouldn't be doing it. Life's too short to waste time on something I don't like.

I have only been quilting a few years (sewing for 70 years) but I do love it. I, like you, have had time to ponder my likes and dislikes, and it seems I am on that same track.

I HATE little pieces!! I once won a bundle of 2" blocks and promptly handed them to the first person that went ooooooooo! Ever since then, my guild members have teased me and ask if I want little pieces. I don't even like to see the quilts with little pieces! I just don't see the beauty.

I can't get into paper piecing, too fiddley, for me (those small pieces again).

I do admire new techniques, they are not always for me, but I love a new way to do something! I have "birthed" a quilt, and would do it again for baby quick projects, but I am not a fan.

Panels are my new passion, I can add a border and have a quick gift. I have cut some panels in different ways to make them more interesting. I like that the scene is there, even if it is obscured by my piecing.

I love all the rulers that are available, but I stick with a few staples, I like to use my 6 1/2" for cutting borders, no thinking required! I have the Shape Cutter (for strips ) and love it. I wouldn't ever want to cut binding strips without it.

I learn so much from this board. I don't know how much I don't know, so it is good to lurk here and not have to ask "stupid" questions (that everyone knows the answer but you). I sound so much more informed when I go to guild!

I do alterations now for some extra $$, but my sewing from scratch days are over since I discovered quilting! I do enjoy making tops, but have to admit I can't seem to get FMQ down. So I quilt by checkbook. But the design, creation, color choices and accomplishments are all mine!

I agree with popover. I like it all. My favorite is EPP. 3 GFG quilts done as wedding gifts, and working on #4. I can set in front of the TV in the evenings for that. I like machine piecing also, (when not in front of the tube!) I guess sandwiching would be my least favorite thing, but not so much that I would put it off! My very favorite part is the binding. When that last stitch is put on, its done, and I can get on to the next one!

The thing I like least - about almost any activity - is putting the "unwanted/unused" stuff I dragged out while looking for what I do want - back where it belongs.

I like it all from paper piecing to curves to applique. The only thing I really dislike is binding. If I could hand that part off to someone else I would

I have done a little foundation paper piecing and like it. Can't FMQ worth a hoot, will keep trying. Love big stitch hand quilting. My limit is 2" squares, anything smaller is gifted to someone else who appreciates them. I won't buy a pattern, usually look at Pinterest and figure out my own patterns. I enjoy hand work. I like to finish what I'm working on before starting something new...no UFO piles for me, although my mind usually has several quilts going while I'm working on the current one.

I enjoy doing it all, even my own quilting such that it is, and I don't mind the bindings. I have a system I guess works for me well enough. I quilt for my own pleasure.

I love putzy complicated piecing, I love figuring out how to do something from the picture, or from an idea in my head. I love paper piecing (foundation) and fussy cut EPP, well and just about anything fussy cut. My current record is a 12 inch block w/ 307 pieces.

My list of dislikes is quite a bit shorter, the actual quilting, I'm not overly fond of, I rely heavily on QAYG and straight line quilting. The only other thing I can think of is repetitive, mind numbing piecing. I love the look of a quilt that is the same one or two blocks repeating (and I have done a few) but give me a nice juicy 300 piece block any day just don't make me sit and sew the same thing 20 times!!! lol

Love hand quilting and playing with fabric. Hate marking and basting. If someone gave me a whole cloth quilt all marked I would be in heaven.
