Applique

I am fairly new to quilting. One of my coworkers is going to have a baby this fall. Her theme is cars, and colors are red and white. I am thinking about making a quilt with applique cars on it. I watched a video someone posted a while back on here about how to applique, but I don't have any clue about the best place to purchase them. Is it better to make your own or purchase them? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it's the best to purchase, but you can always google cars as outlines and print those off as your outline.

It sounds like a fun quilt! Do a search and you should find free ones available for your project.

If you know anyone with a machine cutter, there is a cute die with accu-quilt.

For a beginner, fusible appliques are easier then needle turn. You can google simple car shapes and print them out. Once you have your drawing, you can transfer it onto the paper back of a fusible like Wonderunder or Misty fuse. You iron the fusible to the back of your fabric and then cut out the shape with your scissors. Peel off the paper back and iron it onto your background fabric. You will need to machine stitch the edge to keep it from coming off after washing.
If that sounds like more then you want to try, Google preprinted fabric panels and look for one you can buy with cars on it. You can make your quilt sandwich and quilt around the cars on the panel.

If you are going to use panels as Tartan recommended I can suggest Quilt Girls.com or Bug Fabric.com. I do a lot of baby quilts and order from both of them...Bug Fabric ships a little faster than Quilt Girls. Good luck with your project.

This quilt looks fun and easy to make with a panel. You can always add interest with some decorative stitches in the quilt blocks.

You could also get a coloring book with cars..It's an easy way to get applique patterns.

Thanks I am looking forward to trying it. I have an idea in mind. I will post pictures when I get it done, but that may be in June because of wrapping up the school year and going on vacation.

It was told to me many years ago to look up coloring pages for kids. Any subject you research will give you bunches of choices. If you are doing machine applique this will help with different cars.
