I also like using these. I did a super queen using block 1 for a client. I don't remember a problem. Have another 1/2 done if I could find it again.

I think I would press the seams open on this block. If you're pressing to the dark side, I can see that it would be very difficult to get them to nest.

Starch the snot out of the fabric before you cut, it will make a big difference on HST’s. Use a drop of glue in the seams to hold them together to sew, then make sure you’re pressing them towards the straight of grain. That really helps me keep my blocks flat and square.

Pressing to the dark fabric is not a 'written in stone' rule. Before trimming the HST's, I would only lightly finger press the seams and then lay out the block so that I could see which way the seams need to be pressed to make them nest. Then press and trim the HST's and put it together.

I had a pattern with the same problem and the writer did not indicate which way to press the pieces. Since I had to make 20 of the problem blocks, I always kept one on the ironing board for reference.

Those cake mix recipes are fun. I would probably press the seams open if I had that problem.

I have used several of these including 1 and never had a problem. My pieces always came out perfectly as long as I cut perfectly. Not in love with tearing paper off. Fun to try but don’t think I will do anymore.

I have made one of these and love it. It was so fun to do and precise just to follow the lines. I did press most of my seams open and that helps too.

I got two Moda Cake Mix Recipe books for Christmas last year from my guild's secret pal. I made a few of the blocks and liked the idea of the book but realized I wasn't about to tear all that paper from all the blocks. I printed the pattern on to Stable Stuff. I can leave that in. My secret pal is happy to see the results of her gift and it's my secret that I didn't use them.
