Enlarging a vintage quilt

Evening folks.....

I have a question, has anyone enlarged an old quilt? I was gifted a friendship braid quilt made in 1968, it is between a full and a queen. I'd like to make it into a king, the question is, do I add rows of braid, add a solid border, or not do it at all, its in amazing shape. My friend who gave it to me, said she had added a flange at one time to make it a king, but tired of it, and removed what she added....

Thanks much!!
Karen

You could, indeed do that. Look at "quilt as you go" instructions to get an idea of how it's possible. I would really have to want it to tackle it, though. I don't think it would be easy. It might look odd if you don't do it well and find a complimentary fabric for the addition.

Whether it's a solid or a print, it will need to blend with the colors and patterns of the existing quilt.

sometimes you only have to add three sides to get the size you need. Think on it.

It can be done. The good news is if you are not fond of what you do you can always take it out. Personally I think with the right fabric and staying as close as possible to the original design you will have a great quilt. be sure to add the new date so someone down the line will know when the addition was made.

I would love to see a picture of this ‘vintage’ quilt.

I guess my husband and I are vintage too, because we’ve been married since 1968!

I think I would find close matched fabrics and repeat the pattern, making the new plaits the border so it looks intentional.

I will take a photo in the light tomorrow....Coincidentally, this was pieced in 1968, by my friends grandmother, as her wedding gift!

I have a big stash of fabrics that are similar, and am on the hunt for more!

I agree, fortunately the pattern is just like a friendship braid, at least that part will be fairly easy....
