Different sort of log cabin
 

I am thinking of making a quilt that is essentially one giant log cabin block. I could put borders on the top and bottom to make it more of a rectangle instead of a square. It would be a couch throw size so not really a big quilt. Have any of you done this and might have a picture of how it turned out? Is there some reason this is a bad idea? I am trying to meet the terms of a guild challenge but need something much faster and simpler than a multi block log cabin quilt.

I googled giant log cabin quilt and several sites came up. I think it is a great idea. You could use jelly roll strips or even wider strips. Please post a picture when it is finished. I'd love to see it.

I've seen one giant log cabin quilts before. They looked very modern. Reminds me our guild had a hexie challenge and my friend made one giant hexie.

I have a free pattern for a giant assymetrical log cabin, 68x72, from Art Gallery called 'Raise the Roof.' I just googled and it's still available. Thank you everyone. Idk why I couldn't think of how to Google to find images. You all sent me in the right directions. If this quilt ever actually appears, I will show you how it turns out. I think I'll explore my stash and see what sort of options I can come up with.

Something I'd never heard of. Thanks for raising the topic.

I am in the process of making one (it is packed away in UFO status). it will end up having 4 or 5 rounds on it total. the center is about 4-5 inches. the logs are not one consistent fabric, but rather, picture a piano key style in each log (wonky, not uniform). one half of the large log cabin is a dark purple/light gray piano keys and the other half is mint green/dark gray piano keys. I also am using a very thin line of the corresponding solid gray with each layer of piano keys to break up all the visual craziness of the keys. The piano keys are probably about 4 inch thick and the little gray logs between are about 1 inch thick. To confuse my description even more, each single "log" is actually made up of three layers of the piano key-gray layers. So, each log is actually closer to 12 or more inches thick before the next log side is added. This will turn out to be a rather large quilt when it is all done.

I like the concept and after clicking on all of the links, I am thinking it is all about the color/print choices, sizes of the strips and ultimately the size of the finished quilt. Csstexas, you have a creative journey ahead of you. Take the challenge. It looks like you have a following of folks who are interested in your results. What fun! I can easily see it in the bold colors of as in an Amish quilt but other options come to mind too.
